New for 2013, Cycle City Tours is pleased to present the Art Wheelers – Public Art Tours.
This truly original public art tour of Vancouver covers a diverse cross-section of the city’s visual landscape. Participants will walk (or cycle) away with a deeper understanding of the role that public art plays in our city, and also learn about its unique history and culture.
The tour follows the picturesque Seawall through Coal Harbour, cuts through downtown via its dedicated bike lanes, then continues along the Seawall around False Creek. All along the way, your guide tells stories about a multitude of different pieces ranging from sculptural installations, murals, fountains, mosaics, buildings, and even some unexpected surprises often overlooked. You will learn about several contemporary pieces as well as some older relics that have fallen by the wayside. Some of the pieces covered may already be familiar, such as A-maze-ing Laughter, but their hidden meanings may still prove surprising. Others you may have overlooked altogether, such as Working Landscape. Whether you are an art aficionado, or a “blank canvas,” this tour will let you see the city through a new lens. This tour is very popular with locals and visitors alike!
Founded in 2011, the Art Wheelers tour was developed by local art experts and bike enthusiasts Carol-Ann Ryan and Rosemary Lennox, with the mission to bring understanding and appreciation to public art in Vancouver. Cycle City Tours is proud to continue offering this fantastic program, redeveloped for 2013 by experienced and knowledgable guide, Dan Hayes, who has curated a select and diverse cross section of urban public art. Dan has brought his in-depth understanding of city history, landscape, and culture to reflect the deeper meaning of pieces we often pass by. Hundreds of works were researched and analyzed to make an interesting and inspiring experience for all.
The tour takes place primarily on the Seawall, so its easy for all ages 12 and up! Art Wheelers tours are also available for private tours and group bookings.
Schedule: Tuesdays and Thursdays 6pm, (June 1 – Sept. 30) - 2 – 2.5 hours, ~9km - $25.00 plus bike rental ( at discount, if required) - Easy – good for all biking abilities!
